Traditional Metal Braces

These are usually the first thing many people think when they hear the word “braces.” They are also the most common type of braces, consisting of fixed stainless-steel wires they stretch across the full length of your smile. These wires are cemented to the front of the teeth through brackets that allow the wire to gently and gradually be tightened to shift the teeth into their proper position.

Metal braces are more cost effective and advances in orthodontic technology mean they are also more comfortable and lighter than ever. Some people even love them because of the option to customize their braces with the colors of their choice.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are clear, making them nearly invisible. In recent years, this has become a popular option, especially with adults. They work the same as traditional braces, save for the fact that the brackets are made from clear ceramic that blends with your tooth’s color.

Ceramic braces have a few disadvantages. They cost more than traditional braces and are generally less durable. The elastic attaching the brackets to the wire can also stain from eating, although they are generally changed out every month so this may not be a problem for most.
