With any orthodontic procedure, there are a number of precautions you should take when it comes to your diet. Common sense can answer a lot of your questions about what foods to avoid, and which can break or damage braces and other orthodontic work. These include sticky foods and those that contain high amounts of sugar as well as bad habits like biting your nails and chewing on non-food items.
Examples of candy that needs to be avoided include:
- Sugar-free and regular gum
- Toffee, caramel, and Tootsie Rolls
- Starbursts, Now or Laters, and Airheads
- Jolly Ranchers and other hard candy
Examples of hard foods to avoid include:
- Crusty bread, bagels, and pizza crust
- Corn on the cob
- Raw vegetables
- Hard fruits like apples
Sugary foods to avoid include:
- Pie and cake
- Ice cream
